The biggest challenge? Ultra-high pressure. Most standard flow meters are rated to only 40 bar or 100 bar. 1380 bar is a whole different level.
Methanol is non-conductive (≈10⁻⁷ S/cm), so electromagnetic flow meters won't work. Turbine meters have moving parts that wear out over time. Vortex technology is the smart choice for methanol – no moving parts, minimal maintenance, and excellent compatibility with 316L stainless steel wetted parts.
The DN15 vortex meter naturally fits the 5/8" pipe size. Flow range 6.6-60.6 L/min? Perfectly within its measurement envelope. Peak flow of 75.7 L/min? No problem.
Standard vortex meters cannot handle 1030-1380 bar. This is the make-or-break factor.
The good news:
Small-bore (DN15) designs are easier to engineer for high pressure than large diameters
Custom high-pressure versions are available from specialized manufacturers
The sensor housing can be integrated into the high-pressure body without compromising strength
Ask every supplier: "What is your maximum pressure rating for DN15 vortex meters, and can you customize for 1380 bar?"
Methanol density changes with temperature. At 1380 bar, even liquids behave differently from standard conditions. If you need mass flow or standardized volume readings, integrated temperature and pressure compensation is highly recommended – and many modern vortex meters offer this feature.
