Level Measurement Challenges in Hydrocarbon Sump Drums
In oil and gas processing facilities, sump drums collect hydrocarbon liquids containing water and other process components. Reliable level monitoring is essential for understanding liquid accumulation and supporting stable plant operations.
However, measuring liquid levels in these vessels can be challenging. Water-containing hydrocarbons may have varying dielectric properties, while the presence of CO₂ and H₂S introduces additional requirements for instrument materials and process compatibility.
In hazardous areas, the level transmitter must also meet the specified explosion protection requirements while providing reliable measurement signals.
A High-Temperature Radar Level Measurement Solution
For this application, the CX-RLM-PB-80G-05 high-temperature radar level transmitter is selected for the sump drum level measurement.
Designed for a measurement range of 0–3,000 mm, the instrument meets the specified accuracy requirement of ±10 mm. Its configuration includes a 4-inch Class 150 lb RF process connection and a 4–20 mA output with HART communication.
The instrument is specified for Zone 2, IIB, T3, EEx d hazardous-area requirements. Its high-temperature configuration is intended for demanding process conditions, subject to verification against the final operating and design temperature requirements.
Supporting Reliable Process Monitoring
With the appropriate configuration, the radar level transmitter provides continuous level measurement and a standard 4–20 mA signal for integration with plant monitoring or control systems.
For applications involving water-containing hydrocarbons, CO₂, and H₂S, material compatibility, sealing requirements, and applicable hazardous-area certifications should be confirmed before installation.
